yesterday i took my 65 pacer on the backroads of indiana for a nice 30 mile round trip. about 1 mile into the ride i was getting that bog down BLAAAA sound in third gear. first i thought maybe it wasnt getting enough air even with the choke open. so i took off the air filter and it seemed to help for about 2 miles. then if i closed the choke almost half way it helped. so i figured the fuel flow was too slow. then after it ran a few more miles the choke vibrated back open and it seemed to run better. once i got about 15 miles at my turn around point, i was at a stop sign and she started to bog down while sitting still. i look down and fuel is flowing out the back of the carb. i shut her off and closed the petcock. i figured the float was somehow obstructed. i took the bowl cover off removed the float pin and needle and spring. didnt see anything and blew off everything the best i could anyway. reassembled the bowl and put the air cleaner back on and fired her up. about 1/2 mile she bogged down again as i turned on another road, i pulled off the road and she died. so i kicked her again and after that she ran fine for the 15 miles home. EXCEPT when i would accelerate over 45mph she would start to bog down after about 1/8 mile at 55mph and if i would back off on the throttle to about 40+ mph she was fine. so that got me to thinking about maybe my original petcock is causing some grief. this winter when i cleaned the carb and cleaned, etched and sealed the tank with por15 kit, i soaked the varnished petcock and screen in carb cleaner and with some slight toothbrush scrubbing the screen was clean, but now i am thinking that there is still some old gunk inside the petcock that i never got out that is not allowing the fuel to flow freely at top speed. am i on the right track? i saw the old posts about repop petcocks being worthless. is there any advice on removing the screen and doing more to clean the inside of the petcock? also if i have about 1 1/4 inch of fuel in the tank she doesnt get enough fuel to run even with the reserve open. so this also makes me think the petcock isnt quite right... should i also be using an inline filter? i am still learning on this, my first project, any thoughts advice is appreciated thanks chris indianapolis |
