Thank you, I apreciate the info....Danny ----- ORIGINAL MESSAGE FOLLOWS ----- Danny, This method is used to adjust the steering head bearings. An update to this method is printed in current HD service manuals. There is a grease fitting on the steering neck(most models)which should be lubricated every 5000 miles. I doubt that most bikes really have much problem with steering head bearing fall away. If you have access to say a softail shop manual. Look up Fall-away under Steering Head bearings. Adjustment is made by either tightening or loosening the fork adjuster nut/bolt until the measurment is within limits. ----- ORIGINAL MESSAGE FOLLOWS ----- I haven't heard the 'fall away' term. What exactly is the purpose of the fall away check ?? What do you adjust and why ?? Thanks....Danny ----- ORIGINAL MESSAGE FOLLOWS ----- Hi folks, On modern Harleys the front fender hole is not for a mud flap or to hang em up for painting. It is for front end fall away adjustment. -- First the bike is raised and cables are disconected from the handlebars. -- A plumb line is attached at the hole with a weight on the other end near the floor. -- The front steering is allowed to fall free to one side and then the other.(thus fall away)After taking measurements, adjustments may be needed. |
