Joe, The weld is original, every one of them was welded at the factory. The fork tube should not be full of oil, turn it upside down and drain the oil out of it, it will stop leaking. If the tab for the brake backing plate is tight and serviceable you are good to go, nothing to fix.

This tang screws through to the other side of fork slider tube and has a spot weld where it protrudes. It is threaded on this end and leaks oil around the treads.

Questions:
1. Is this spot weld supposed to be there? My guess is not.
2. If not, What is the normal setup? Can I remove the old tang and rehabilitate the threads to tighten up the fit?

What would be the best method of fixing this worn piece?
