The grease fitting services the crankshaft bearings. The fitting isn't on the pre-production 1953 165cc engine shown in the How To Restore Section. However, my 165 has this fitting. The fitting is shown on the 1954, 1955, and 1956 pre-production photos. The later pre-production photos do not show the left side in detail. Someone, perhaps Mutt, explained this to me as follows. In areas where motorcycles were stored during long cold winters, there were instances of crankshaft corrosion due to evaporation of the fuel/oil film. Prior to long cold storage, the crankshaft bearing was to be given a shot of grease. Evidently, greasing the crankshaft bearings proved either un-helpful, un-necessary, or harmful, because the fitting was eventually discontinued. Mutt advised me to not grease the crankshaft here in Texas, where we ride all winter.

This fitting is broken off in the left crank case, behind the oil dip stick hole (see attached pic, screw driver bit points to the fitting). Can anyone tell me what is supposed to mount in this position? Thanks.

hey fellas this is a grease fitting!!!!!!!!! on my 56st, BUT ON BOTH SIDES ? NONE on the 61 bt or spare engine for 61bt on second 56st motor it also has one per side. ENLIGHTENMENT REQUIRED PLEASE looks like goes to crankshaft bearing then to seal. To push grease between outer crankshaft bearing and seal, or to get grease between crankshaft bearings? Just a guess? bruce, dave, mutt, richard, The question of the week?
