"Magneto models have no battery; generator models do and need one in order to start. Neither have electric start, so kicking is required. So is a lot of patience - well for me at least! And a call to Mutt when I get really frustrated."
....not always the case, sorry Ratfink. I can let my '48 sit for 2 years, add new gas and get it started third kick. After that it's always the first kick. Don't discourage the lady. She did ask Pretty Please. Welcome Anna; you're going to find a great bunch of people here. Feel free to ask any questions you want, any time. Antique bikes have their limitations but you knew that coming in. They also have their charms. Ratfink is right about bigger is better but I started on a Honda 90 in the 60's. It was 'just right' for me at the time. After that I went bigger when the time was right. These bikes are a real kick...and somehow they make it into your soul. For a lot of us it was our first love. Jeez, I can't believe I just wrote that! On second thought....I'll let it stand.

Most speedometers are scaled up to 60 mph which fairly represents the bike's top speed - on a good day... downhill... with a tail wind

3 speed

They are great niche bikes for men and woman of all ages and sizes.

While "streetable', keep in mind you are riding an underpowered and underengineered bike by today's standards. Add another cylinder and 835 more cc's and you have a much more streetable bike called a sporty! (okay harley mathameticians - you only need 718 cc's for some sporty's and 1135 for others. I have a '77 1000 cc).
