Gramps:

Sitting, doing nothing all day long is not good for speedometers. Since everything seems to be working ok but you have a noise, about the only thing it could be is
the speed cup spindle. It must be worn and bone dry.
You can try this:
Remove the speedometer. The threaded cable nipple should have a brass cup on the larger flange that meets with the speedometer shell. This cup is about 1/8 in diameter and should have a small hole in the bottom. If you don't see a hole or if the cup is full of dirt/grease/grime, clean it out with a small flat screwdriver. Then position the speedo on its side with the brass cup pointing up and
put two drops of 3 in one oil in the cup. Do that daily times two. Then reinstall the speedo and test if for noise.
If it disappears, you are home free----until it happens again which may not occur. If that does not stop the problem, you will eventually need some work done on the speedometer.

Good luck, Duane Taylor

Got my motor back from Mutt and it's running like a top!!! Thanks Mutt for a great job.
My question is, after sitting for quite a few years I have noise in the speedometer. Is this a problem that can be corrected with lubrication? It seems to register the speed correctly just makes a lot of noise. I've greased the gear but did nothing to the speedo itself. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again to Mutt and Duane Taylor for their help in getting this old girl back on the road.
