Save them, clean them and look again. Chemcly clean them, NO wire brush on the bench grinder. Maybe a small toothbrush sized wire brush or just a toothbrush between soak in your favorite rust remover.

Neutralize the chemical, should be in the package directions, or MSDS.

Don't leave in acid then go on vacation, but you knew that (I've done that, ---What parts in the little jar?).

I've used fresh "CocaCola", petroleum jelly, "Mothers" parts cleaners, raw acids -muriatic, dilute sulfieric, oxalic, phsphoric, take great care with these, face protection! You can't take the bike for a spin with no eyes, One eye & it's really difficult.

With "Cocacola" The bubbles help. Clean the oil (and soap) off before rust removing, both are inhibitors to the rust removal. (What no MSDS for "Cocacola" whats this BS)

I want to try the "electrolitic rust removal", havent got to it, probably the safest on unreplacable parts.

Lets see $3 per bolt + $4 for each special thread and special thickness nut--- ---that totals--- be careful with the ones you have.

SAVE THOSE NUTS AND BOLTS !!!

The bolts are marked CP 1038 - these are the correct ones. Besides the markings, many of the nuts and bolts are slightly different from the garden-variety ones you find in hardware stores.

CP stands for Chandler Products. Harley used (mostly) CP nuts and bolts from the 1940's through the 1960's.

The black finish is called Parkerizing. You can buy a can of the solution, heat it up (in the garage or outdoors) and drop the nuts & bolts in the hot solution. But don't use your wife's cooking pans - she'll make you stay in the garage for a long, long time.

Some nuts and bolts have a "bright" finish - cadmium plating. You can't do that at home. Places that do cad plating are harder to find these days, but they're out there.

Old Dude http://www.olddude.com 1-877-653-3833 sells repro CP 1038 hardware - both Parkerized and Cad plated. A typical bolt costs $3 or $4.

Hopefully, some other members can suggest where to get the black oxide solution and cad plating, and some of the odd Hummer-only fasteners.

Dave

Just started restoring a 1955 165. It was VERY rusty. I had to fight every nut and bolt to get them off. What do I do with them (the nuts and bolts)now. Sand blast and powder coat? A lot of them even seem beyond repair. What kind of finish was on them origionally. They all looked black, but not painted. Is there a nut and bolt package out there where I can order a complete new set (similar to a gasket set when rebuilding the motor).
