That's a goodly part of the answer. The failure was with the wire clamped as yours but routed up at the clamp past the head tube. I'd re-clamped it toward the tank from the bolt with the same routing. The bike had been worked on by a DPO in a hack-like mode.

I don't know if the routing is correct or not. I did the bike over 20 years ago and at the time wasn't looking to have it judged (AMCA meets). The front end has never even touched the wiring the way its routed though.

Nice pic of a rubber band front end. I see possible problems with the wire and the tank-mount/turn-stop. Will the lower arm cut the wire when hard over? I've seen this as a cut harness on a bike, where should the wire be routed, clamp be placed?
