I've emailed you and Brent both over the last 3 years. Not one time have you told me "simply do the research on some technical area of the Hummers, write it up coherently, and email it to Brent and Dave, along with supporting photos, etc. We'll make sure it gets published on the site." All I got was a dead horse. No reply. ----- ORIGINAL MESSAGE FOLLOWS ----- Updating the Website The Hummer Club website certainly needs updating. The amount of technical information to help people "preserve and restore" the Hummer-series of motorcycles has remained stagnant for many, many years. Why? Because few people submit technical information to us, so there's nothing for us to publish. How can you help? It's easy – simply do the research on some technical area of the Hummers, write it up coherently, and email it to Brent and Dave, along with supporting photos, etc. We'll make sure it gets published on the site. Look in the "How-To-Restore" section. Some of the chapters are on discrete topics, such as carburators, speedometers, chainguards, paint colors, etc. Pick a topic that has not been covered, or do a major update on one that already has. Some chapters cover each year/model. The chapter is broken down into a list of topics that are in the same order as the sections of the Spare Parts Catalogs. The idea for this is to present information on what changed on this year/model, or "unchanged from previous year". Pick a year/model that you're familiar with, and fill in the blanks. Whichever way works for you, do the research, and send us your results. The webmasters are not experts on Hummers, or anything else for that matter. Our job is to take the results of your technical research, and present it on the website in a coherent manner. Let's see how this works on a similar site managed by Dave Hennessey - www.harleyKmodel.com Check the Technical section. You will find many technical topics in there. At the top of each page, you'll find a list of authors. The first names listed are the primary author(s) followed by collaborators and fact-checkers. The authors did the research and submitted it. The material was circulated for comment. When general agreement was reached, it was published on the site. The K-model site has a lot of active participants, so it is regularly updated. The goal of the Hummer Club website is to "foster the preservation and restoration of the American-made Harley- Davidson lightweight motorcycle". What we need is technical restoration information. What we don't need is photos of radical customs, videos of modified Hummers doing wheelstands, and other things that are not related to restoration. Something else we don’t need is a flashy new website design that doesn't provide any new technical restoration information. One person has asked "Give me the password to your website and I'll update it". Another has asked "Just turn the entire website over to me and I'll update it". While we're sure these folks mean well, this is NOT going to happen, so don't waste your breath. We'll be happy to update the website – but YOU, the Hummer Community, needs to actively participate. |
