".....In my younger days, I and my brother had many scooters and bikes... My brother had a big wheel Cushman that I was too little to drive myself but I rode with him .. as I previously stated, my first bike was a 1949 125.... I then went to the 1953 125 and then to the 1953 triumph 500 Speed Twin. My next bike was a 1957 BSA 500 Twin.. I bought it new and took delivery straight from England.. came in a wood crate.. the summer of 1958 I was at the Harley Shop in Danville, my home town, and the owner, Ed Guill, asked if I would be interested in taking a trip with him and a father and son from South Boston, VA , down to El Paso, Texas to see a bull fight. After a long discussion with my parents, I decided to go. We left Danville and traveled down through Tennessee to Little Rock, AR... took a northern track into Missouri, down through the northern part of Texas through Dallas and on down to El Paso. We spent several days there with side trips down into Mexico.. we saw the bull fight.. on Saturday night we decided to go to a drag race to watch.. we were approached by track people and asked to participate in the race as they had two other bikes but needed four to give a trophy.. Ed and I decided to do it... I beat my man and Ed beat his man and Ed and I ran for the Trophy which Ed won... ED Guill was a former racer ... He won the Langhorne, PA National in 1947 ridding a Norton.... Ed suggested that we continue our trip on to San Jose, CA as there was going to be a 25 mile National AMA race there the following Sunday. We looked at the map and decided to go north through the Painted Desert, by the Meter Crater, up to the mouth of the Grand Canyon, We rode the rim of the Canyon down to the Grand Canyon National Park. We continued west across the desert to Los Angeles, CA and up to San Jose and saw the race. We traveled east through Lake Tahoe, Salt Lake City, across Wyoming to Chicago and back down to Danville, VA. ... was on the road for about a month and a half and traveled over 7000 mi. Was a once in a lifetime event..."
