Front drive chain

Postby Clarks3 » Sun Feb 20, 2022 7:47 pm

I'm trying to figure out how to adjust the tension on the front drive chain in my 1953 Hummer 165cc St
I'm not able to locate in the service manual where to adjust the tension if it is too loose or does it need replaced. thank you

If it is loose, that indicates it is stretched and in need of replacement as mentioned.
You may also want to inspect the teeth of both the crank sprocket and the clutch sprocket for worn or curved teeth and replace as required.

Is there a spec to define "Loose"? Mine has some slack, how much is too much?
Reading the manual there is a lot of "If it is worn, replace it" for example the clutch plate thickness is not specified.

If the chain can be pulled about half way up the sprocket tooth, it is stretched/worn.
If you remove it from the sprockets and lay as though it is on the sprockets so one half is stacked on the other half, gripping the loops of the chain and pull them toward you, creating an arch, the tighter the arch means it is stretched/worn.
Additionally, if the sprocket teeth are pointed at the tips instead of rounded tips, the chain may be stretched/worn.
Replacing the chain with worn sprockets will prematurely wear the chain.

There is a lot of information on-line about motorcycle drive chains and maintenance which applies here.

Additionally, consider how much riding you will be enjoying and judge if the chain really NEEDS to be replaced.
Of course, there is always ‘Peace of Mind’.
