First, remove the wire retaining ring on the back of the clutch basket, that holds the starter ratchet gear onto the clutch basket. Remove the collar and the spring and set aside. Do ya have a dial caliper? measure the o.d. of the clutch basket where the ratchet gear rides, then measure the i.d. of the gear. Subtract that from the first measurement to see how much clearance you have. You shouldn't have any more than .002 or .003"difference. If there is excessive clearance, the gear can twist sideways and allow the teeth on the gear to unmesh with the teeth the basket, which in turn will cause the kicker to slip thru like it's doing now. Same goes for the kicker gear on it's shaft, it should be a snug fit on it' s shaft/ Next remove the ratchet gear off the basket. Look at the teeth on the back of the basket and on the side of the ratchet it self. All the teeth should have sharp 90º edges where the mesh with either other.

Take some pics and post them

Hi Mutt
The gear and shaft measure within your tolerance. I can barely feel any movement side to side on the shaft. The teeth look ok, they certainly engage when the gear is resting on the basket. The kick gear is pretty tight on its shaft. I'm wondering if the spring isnt worn out and not holding the gear in? I was able to kick it through (when the clutch basket was still on) however it still would slip on occasion. It happens pretty fast so I cant really see what's happening to cause it.
Thanks
Adam

the teeth on the ratchet gear(s) are worn badly. Way worse on the stationary gear riveted to the clutch basket.

The 59 and later ratchets were total junk. Starting about 1955, The Davidson brothers really starting cutting corners on all kinds of stuff. The MOCO's bottom line became more important than building a bike that would last. From 1948 thru 1958, the starter had a great set up with 12 teeth and worked 10 times better (instead of the 6 teeth the 59 and later gears have) That would save them money in the machining process (having to only make 50% of the milling cuts and make them more money in the near future selling new parts when those parts quickly wore out) Like they didn't make enough money during WWII with contracts for 100,000+ motorcycles and spare parts, plus other components. Greed ..................

Are you referring to the ones you circled being worn badly? I see an example of the stationary gear you are referring to on ebay. Too bad about the parts quality. About the ratchet gears, they get pushed together during the kick and are probably the ones slipping?

AHA!!

Hopefully this is it. I went over the transmission/clutch diagram again and noticed that the ratchet sprint was not in the right spot(between the ratchet gear and the collar). Mine was between the bearing and the thrust washer. Will reassemble tomorrow and see.

Does anyone know how tall the starter ratchet spring is supposed to be? Would like to know if mine is fatigued.

Dang!
Correcting the spring location did not correct the slipping issue. Looks like I may need
other 31T clutch sprocket. Anybody have one? 37707-59

I tried to tell ya. If the rest of the 5 teeth on the ratchet gear itself looks like the one at 6 o'clock Ya might wanna replace that too. The edge of the teeth need to be at 90º angle and sharp. other wise, they tend to slide off their mates.

Yeah, you did, but I had to try it with the spring correctly installed. The other teeth are not that chipped but are not at 90 either. Looks like I'll need to send this out. Is this something you would have time to do?

I think I have a lead on a sprocket. Do you have a ratchet gear by chance? What are your rates or is it by the job?
