This link should take you to an original 1951 which was given many many accessories.
Not my bike but I have followed it for a number of years as it changed hands. Awesome original example of what accessories were available in 1951.
This may shed some light.

Coincidentally, I am rewiring my '49 which has an ammeter, trying to figure out how it hooks up. I'd appreciate any guidance.

KJohn,
Remove the wire going to your negative battery terminal. Connect that to the ammeter positive terminal. Then, add a new wire from the negative ammeter terminal to the negative battery terminal. I'm assuming the ammeter terminals are marked.
