1956st engine magneto conversion

Here's where to ask questions and get answers

Going back to your very first post, you say "... battery style ignition". The conversion magneto pictured is a small completion type for this engine that is for ignition only. There just isn't any way a #10 lighting coil can be added to this magneto.

The magneto used on the '55 and later Hummers, Ranger, etc. is maybe 25% larger in physical size and has a #10 lighting coil. The timing side engine case and cover was changed accordingly.

As I read through this thread, adding a lighting coil just can't be done. Only way out I see if you wish to use this magneto for ignition is to use a rechargeable 12V LI battery along with LED lighting on a constant loss basis.

Log on Thumper Talk and do a search on Total Loss Lighting. There was a post by RockerYZWR dated 12/31/16 that gives all the details.

I think that things might have gotten a little jumbled up on this conversation. I just was asking about converting a generator model165st to a magneto ( ignition only no lights). Mutt posted exactly what I was looking for. But then another style magneto got brought up and talked about. It’s great though learning about both.

Mutt , on the arbor that is pictured earlier on in this thread I’m guessing the points cam and magnet are locked in place on the arbor with a woodruff key And is the arbor locked on crankshaft end with a woodruff key also? I ask because I’ve been trying to make an arbor. And they im wondering if it matters where on the crankshaft the cam lobe should be positioned?

the cam and rotor are locked together with a key and the arbor is keyed to the generator shaft. The cam and rotor are movable on the arbor, to set your timing at 13/64 BTDC. The end cap, which bolts down against the arbor is also keyed to the cam/rotor

Sounds good. I made my arbor out of an old armature that was way past repair. So I turned it down until thr rotor and cam just pressed on. It seems like it’ll work. The spacer length I made in reference to arbor length.

I’m still guessing on everything. I was hoping to use the old generator shaft bolt but I’m not sure what I’ll make the end cap out of.

Here’s a couple pictures of what I have come up with so far. I need to figure out different spacers I think. Possibly the whole thing is wrong I’ve never seen a picture of this type of magneto in one of these engines before. I’m barely getting a spark. I can feel a small jolt coming out of the spark plug wire when I kick it over but can’t actually see the spark. Lol!! Anyway if there’s any pictures somewhere of one of these type of mags in a hummer engine I’d love to see them for some references on this project I’ve started. Thanks!!

I haven’t posted to this thread for awhile but I finally got the Bendix magneto conversion finished and it’s running!! I still have some fine tuning to do but it’s pretty cool to finally see it working. I tried to upload a short video of the engine running with it but for some reason the video won’t load. So here’s a picture of it. Thanks to mutt for all the help. If I ever figure out how to get the video to load I will put it on.
