L&L carburetor float

Postby Emerica1975 » Thu May 18, 2023 8:32 am

I have a float from an L&L carb that is filling with gas. I’m wondering if anyone has any pointers on how to fix this.

Sounds good. I thought maybe there was an epoxy I didn’t know about that could seal things up. But I’ll give my soldering skills a try. Thanks!

You might consider trying wicking grade Loctite 290 thread locker.

In addition to recommended use for thread locking assembled fasteners, Loctite also recommends this grade for sealing porosity in welded assemblies and porous castings.

for use, first clean with Acetone. The Acetone also acts as a primer to help set up most grades of Loctite.

Awhile back I asked Loctite's tech support about using their products when wetted with gasoline and other petroleum products. Their reply was Loctite thread lockers are perfectly suitable for this application.

If you try this, let us know how it works out.

Good luck.

I’ll give the loctite 290 a try. I can only find the permatex green where I live. It looks to have the same properties. But maybe I’ll have to order the loctite if the green permatex doesn’t work.

I have no experience with Permatex Green. I do know that Loctite's 290 wicking grade thread locker is green in color.

In this case, its the very low viscosity needed to wick into minute voids to seal the porosity. I would say if the Permatex Green has a very low viscosity, it will probably wick its way into minute voids and seal those areas. I would still recommend using the Acetone first.

How quickly does the gas leak out of the float when it is in open air? If the hole is big enough to drain quickly, solder is probably the best way to stop the leak. If it is so slow you can't see the leak source, then the Loctite may work. Getting the gas out may be the most difficult part.

An old thread, I know.
Just would like to know how this worked.
Were You able to find where the float was leaking, get it dried out and sealed up ?
How did that green Permatex sealer work ?
Just curious, has anyone had experience with a float popping when heating it to solder a leak ?

I had to order the loctite 290 I haven’t had a chance to use it yet because I was able to solder the float and it worked for awhile but the leak came back. So now I’m going to solder it again and the coat it with the loctite 290. I’ll let you know how it goes. I’ve never had the float pop open when heating to solder it but I’ve also only tried it a few times.
