Wheel building

Postby Emerica1975 » Tue Jul 18, 2023 12:44 am

I’m trying to true a 19 inch wheel that I just laced. But I’m having a hard time getting the spokes to snug up without having some spokes seeming way too long and some seeming way too short. I’m wondering is if anyone can point to a good video or set of instructions on how to true the 19 inch wheel. Also is there a good truing stand out there that works with hummer wheels that isn’t crazy expensive. Thanks!

I had a look at the truing stand and its a lot like the one I built for myself. I looked at the specs and it says 15 mm axle. I used a 12 mm shaft with the wheel bearings in place on the rim . I then made spacers out of 1/2 inch nuts drilled to 15/32, with tapped set screws to keep the rim in place when you spin the wheel.I then used two dial indicators, top and side, to do the truing. Its easier than trying to see the gap between the rim and the supplied pointers.

Thanks for the info. I will keep working on building and truing this wheel. It’s actually got a spool style hub made from 2 hummer front wheel assembly’s that the drums have been removed and the 2 flange sides joined to make one spool hub.

Its not as scary as it seems. My front wheel hub was straight and the back was bent. The front went together no problem. The back was a head scratcher until I figured out I was looking how the spokes went into the hub was all wrong. Then it was as easy as the front. good luck.

you may have the offset wrong. There is a spec in the repair manual for the offset.
