Front Forks on Pacer

I have a ’64 Pacer and am starting to rebuild it. I have removed the front forks from the brackets. The right slider easily slid out of the outer tube but the left is somehow stuck. The slide tube will twist but something is keeping it from coming out.

Can anyone tell me what I’m missing or how to get it apart.

Someone down the line has over tightened the slider and has twisted the end of the spring so it is larger than the bushing. Almost impossible to remove with out ruining the tube.
