assembly procedure

I am in the process of assembling a 1954 ST-165 that is completely apart but all parts are painted. Once I get the engine back together should I mount it in the frame first or is it better to get the wheels and kick stand on before mounting the engine so the bike will stand up on it's own?

It's a lot easier with the wheels on and standing straight up and on a lift.

I have another question. How do you figure out how many shims are required to be placed between the sprocket shaft seal and the sprocket shaft outer bearing on the flywheel assembly? The shims appear to be about .008 thick. Are they used to eliminate flywheel end play?

Not to eliminate it, but to establish .003=.007" end play. Install sprocket and nut (no key) Tighten nut, pull sprocket all the way over to the left side of motor. measure gap between sprocket and bearing. subtract .005" from that and that will tell ya how many shims ya need

Mutt, I assume, when making the adjustment, the outer sprocket shaft bearing should be installed in the left crankcase before you tighten the sprocket onto the sprocket shaft with the sprocket nut. Also, can you use the smaller shims (part number 6760) to adjust the end play instead of the earlier shims (part number 23741-47)? I think the later 6760 shims would be easier to work with since the bearing is a press fit onto the sprocket shaft.

Thanks for all your help Mutt and Keith. I have another question regarding part number 35209-47 main gear sprocket, nut and oil seal. On mine the rubber insert was hard as a rock and breaking up. Is the rubber insert available as a separate piece or do I have to replace the complete part?

I was wondering what is the prefered sealant for joining the two crankcase halves prior to screwing them together? I used Gasgacinch on my 1947 Indian Chief and never had a problem but was advised that Loctite #518 was better.

HondaBond4, YamaBond4 ThreeBond. All the same stuff, just different packaging. Guarenteed leak proof. I won't any thing else.
